When we take a biopsy, it doesn't get boxed up and shipped to a corporate lab across the country. It goes down the hall — to our own dermatopathology lab, where it's processed by our histology team and read under the microscope by Paul Haun, MD, our board-certified dermatopathologist. Faster answers, one chart, and a pathologist your provider can talk to in person.

Dermatopathology is its own board-certified specialty — the microscopic diagnosis of skin disease. Ours is done by Dr. Haun, a dermatologist and dermatopathologist who also sees patients in these offices.

Beyond the standard slide
Some diagnoses need more than routine staining. Our lab supports advanced techniques — including immunohistochemistry (IHC), special stains that highlight specific cell types and markers — which matter most for tricky melanocytic lesions, unusual tumors, and inflammatory disease. Dr. Haun's fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania included complex cases like cutaneous lymphoma, and that depth stays in-house.

Meet The Pathologist
Paul Haun, MD
Dual board-certified — in dermatology and in dermatopathology — Dr. Haun trained at OHSU (chief resident) and completed his dermatopathology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. He reads the practice's pathology and sees patients at all three offices — which means the person diagnosing your biopsy has very likely examined skin just like yours in clinic that same week.
